TGS is committed to equity and diversity in providing educational experiences, in our support for all students, and in the provision of information and advice to ensure sexuality or gender orientation is not a barrier to a safe and enjoyable international experience. At the same time, it is important to understand that laws applying to same-sex relationships vary in each country, often as a reflection of culture and religion, and even where there are laws against homosexual behavior, these laws are often applied inconsistently, for example:

• Same-sex relationships may only be legal in certain regions of some countries

• Same-sex relationships may not be expressly prohibited, but they can still be considered socially unacceptable or taboo

• Female same-sex relationships may be silently accepted, while male same-sex relationships are not

  • In some countries in Asia, any public display of affection (PDA) is frowned upon even between heterosexuals, and societal norms around dating and fraternizing can differ. TGS provides advice on these practices during pre-departure and orientation with a view to keeping all students safe.

  • Several LGBTQIA+ students a year complete programs or internships in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia with TGS. Each of them were as “out” as they were comfortable with in the destination country, with some engaging with local LGBTQIA+ communities in country, while others maintain a low profile.

  • TGS has team members and program partners in same-sex relationships, who are well connected within the LGBTQIA+ communities in SE Asia and can support program participants where required or requested. We can provide advice and safe connections into those communities, to assist with your understanding of any risks involved.

  • You should do your own research into the laws and practices of destination countries. Smartraveller provides general advice for LGBTQIA+ travelers worldwide, and country specific advice in relation to safety and local laws.

    Since Laws may not be consistently applied, you can reach out to the international traveling community via forums such as Lonely Planet, Trip Advisor or your own local community forums, where other travelers or residents can provide advice to help determine the risk involved.

    Your sexuality should not be an impediment to overseas travel. There is information and support to ensure you can enjoy the same experience as any other student if you are prepared properly.
